What is ICE?

ICE is a parental control tool that’s easy and straightforward to use.

ICE is a parental control tool that’s easy to set up and straightforward to use, whether you’re a computer novice or a web expert.

It provides young people the freedom to explore and learn within a safe space, and it grants parents peace of mind knowing they are in control while helping their kids to grow increasingly Internet-savvy and confident online.

The Initial Challenge:

While designing ICE, our engineers were looking for an easier way to sift through all the unwanted sites on the Internet.

The challenge was to give users a chance to create their own unique proprietary web spaces while allowing them to communicate and share their discoveries with people from all over the world.

The Problem:

After scouring the web for ideas, our developers realized that blocking out the inappropriate sites (blacklisting) just wouldn’t work because the Internet changes too quickly. In 2009 alone, 47 million new websites were created.*

With that kind of constant change, it becomes virtually impossible to keep track of the web and it would take incessant daily upkeep to maintain an effective blacklist.

The Solution: ICE!

This is where ICE and its dynamic whitelists come in. By indexing the URL’s and websites users want to see, ICE is able to create personalized webspaces that are fully customizable to all their wants and needs.

By opening whitelists up to a social ranking system on ICE, the work is shared amongst members of that particular subnet. Everyone has a say, and all voices are heard in the democratic voting system. Even better, search results are not based on sponsors or advertisements, but on the overall consensus of their chosen community.

Mission / Vision

We believe that the Internet should be a place for kids to learn, grow and interact with confidence.

Internet safety takes a village, so to speak, which is why we’ve created ICE using a community approach. Our team of experts and advocates are there to help you ensure that your kids stay within a safe space, without being at a disadvantage online.

Partners / Support

ICE proudly supports the community through Kiwi Seminars, a non-profit organization which brings Internet safety education directly to schools and neighborhoods within the Greater Toronto Area through free seminars.

ICE also works with the experts and advocates of Kiwi Commons, an Internet safety blog dedicated to bringing parents and teachers the most informative and comprehensive news, guides, and media on Internet safety online.
